Voorhees College will donate backpacks and school supplies to 500 Bamberg County public school students, Aug. 14 at two locations. Parents and students may pick up backpacks and supplies in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot (3386 E Railroad Ave.) in Bamberg from 10 to 11:30 a.m. or while supplies last. Backpacks and supplies also will be available for pickup in the Piggly Wiggly parking lot (18147 Heritage Hwy.) in Denmark from 12 to 1:30 p.m. or while supplies last.

“We are excited about the beginning of a new academic year and we wanted the community to know that we are true partners in education. Providing school supplies, including backpacks, for students is one way for us to show our support,” said Ronnie Hopkins, president of Voorhees College.

Hopkins said this is also an opportunity for high school seniors to begin the enrollment process at Voorhees. Admissions information is shared on the school supplies flyer.

According to Charlene Johnson, vice president for student affairs, Voorhees is involved in community service through student service learning activities and various clubs and organizations.

“Community engagement is a vital part of the education process at Voorhees,” Johnson said. “We are preparing students to become global citizens and to make a difference in the human condition around the world beginning at home.”
